Are those tens and hundreds of thousands of apps curated, or just another means to increase service revenue? I now find myself avoiding the purchase of any App Store product which comes from a developer I don’t know and don’t trust, and for many this has led to a loss of trust in Apple itself. Instead of building on the reputation and trust which had been the core of the software market, the App Store has weakened if not destroyed the trust we can put in software. Sadly, experience is to the contrary, with counterfeits and worse being offered for sale. With what appeared to be stringent criteria for review, Apple has repeatedly told us how it has curated all the apps which it sells. Initially for iOS, where it made sense, three years later Apple followed that with its Mac OS X store. Then in 2008 Apple brought change with its App Store. It was a small world, and reputations were important. Apple produced a wonderful encyclopaedic directory of all the Mac software offered by officially registered developers. Even freeware and shareware came from known developers. In those days, most came from reputable suppliers, industry names. Looking back to 2006, the other big differences in privacy are the apps which I use. I’m delighted that Apple is starting to oppose this secretive and sordid trade in personal data. I still feel a little exhilaration each time I remember doing so. Who on earth could afford to provide such services free of charge to the end user? The fact that they don’t declare their business models frankly only confirms that, if people really understood what they’re up to, many more would do as I did several years ago, and close their Facebook account. Google, Facebook and other social media are of course businesses which are built on this trade. Apple and others are trying to catch up with those who have been abusing our trust to make money from our data. In both cases, recent advances in privacy protection have followed years of neglect. Privacy protection is mainly aimed at two areas: online extraction when we’re accessing Google’s services and social media like Facebook, and the apps which we run on our Macs and devices. Now I do the same using their iOS app, well away from any risk of catching Covid-19, but trusting everything on that iPhone to respect the privacy of that transaction. Gone are the days when I used to drop into my local bank and ask one of the staff – most of whom knew me – to transfer some money from one account to another. In a world where physical banks are vanishing, and writing cheques strongly discouraged, we have no option. I think this is genuine, and that anyone who uses their computer(s) and devices to store sensitive information has to take privacy seriously. So why have we become so concerned about protecting our privacy? Is this just a marketing feature, or a spurious alarm raised by those selling digital snake-oil? Without a single dialog or prompt about accessing protected files. A few minutes of Spotlight search, courtesy of HoudahSpot, and I was able to quote chapter, verse and year to answer a question from a former colleague. Only last night I needed to huck out some information from old files, going right back to the early 1990s. That made me consider why privacy is now more important than access. I looked back a little last week, in a throwaway line: fifteen years ago, in 2006, when Spotlight arrived on our Macs “we were all more concerned with finding our documents than preventing others from reading their contents”. Looking back may not seem an Apple thing, but it’s a great advantage to be a Janus. With an uncluttered interface and convenient functionality, this app is a good choice for most computer-savvy users.I’m no interior designer, and have a lifelong hatred for open-plan offices anyway, but there’s one feature that I’m sure Apple’s headquarters still needs: at each level, at least one working Mac from each five year period since 1984. Bottom LineĬlamXav for Mac gives you the tools to keep your computer clean. Tough on beginners: You may experience difficulty using this program, as it doesn't really guide you through the scanning and deleting process as similar apps do. For instance, you can choose to show the path to the file, view it in the finder, quarantine it, or just delete it, depending on what it is and why it was flagged. Result options: Once you have your scan results, you have several options for dealing with potential issues. Buttons in the app's main toolbar allow you to quickly perform primary functions. Straightforward interface: The main interface is split into three sections: a list of your favorite items to scan on the left, scan results on the top right, and status on the bottom right. With clear controls and instructions, this program makes it easy to keep your data safe. ClamXav for Mac scans your computer or selected files and folders for viruses to help keep it running smoothly. BANGUED, Abra(PIA) - The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Provincial Engineering Office recently gave updates on the status of projects under the Support to Barangay Development Program (SBDP) of the national government in Abra, in line with Executive Order 70 of President Rodrigo Duterte in ending the more than 50 years insurgency problem in the country.Īll located in the uplands, four barangays in Malibcong namely Duldulao, Buanao, Bayabas, and Dulao and two barangays in Sallapadan - Naguilian and Ud-udiao - are recipients of the 18 SBDP projects identified by the community themselves. Just remember: you only get a maximum of two of them, so make it count. Just chuck a stunner and the enemy won't be able to land a shot before you've downed them. Stun Grenades are amazing when you’re sure someone's lurking in a room. Just remember: enemies with Ghost won’t show up, so keep an ear out for footsteps, too. Sniffing out the competition is much easier with the help of the Heartbeat Sensor, the best Tactical in Warzone. Tactical: Heartbeat Sensor/Stun Grenades/Stim ShotĬaldera is a large map, and even when you're skulking around it can be very difficult to locate your enemies. It's easier to throw it at moving targets, but there’s also the Molotov bomb which comes in handy as a distraction. This explosive can also be tossed on roofs to take out multiple squad members at once.Įqually, try Semtex. If you're not a fan, C4 is a good alternative. It's perfect for finishing off injured opponents quickly. Thermite is currently the meta choice, and it's easy to understand why. Getting that extra few frames to start shooting your secondary is often a life-and-death situation, and Amped has saved the skin of many a player. If you're not using a pistol, that fast weapon swap speed is extremely important and can absolutely change gunfights in your favour. You'll find a Heartbeat Sensor in most players' Tactical slots, and this perk makes sure you're undetectable by Heartbeat Sensors, UAVs, and Radar Drones.Īmped is useful in almost every single class in Warzone. If you're happy to head into Caldera or Rebirth islands with a handgun or launcher, it's worth doing so for the Ghost perk. All other Tier-2 perks should come after this one, unless you've got very lucky with ground loot. If you want to run two primary weapons in your loadout, you need the Overkill perk. This perk allows you to move faster around the tropical island regardless if you are rushing to a spot or simply running for your life. There are other options, but for the most part you’ll have your life saved by this perk whenever you step on a Proximity Mine or come across a C4 explosive. Here are the best perks available in the game to give you an even better head start every match:Į.O.D reduces the damage you take from non-killstreak explosives and fire, making it a popular choice for most loadouts. The XM4 could work as a poor man’s Cooper Carbine, but it lacks some fire rate somewhat compensated for with an extra damage boost. This severely limits its potential, but overall it's a great assault rifle. The biggest downside of the XM4 (opens in new tab) is its meagre five available attachments, since it's not a Vanguard gun. It's a great weapon for mid-to-long encounters, but it lacks the recoil management and trustworthiness to be the obvious first choice. The KG M40 (opens in new tab) hit the ground running when it debuted in Season 2: it boasts the second-highest damage-per-shot in the assault rifle category. I'll update this list again for Season 4 to confirm whether this will be one of the popular weapons in the game. We'll see how it performs throughout the season to see if it can reclaim its spot near the top of this list.Īt least on paper the Nikita AVT (opens in new tab) assault rifle has all the attributes to become a meta weapon in the near future, especially while carrying the best rate of fire of its class. I'm personally hurt by the nerfs inflicted on the Kar98k (opens in new tab): it was once one of the best weapons in Warzone, but the decrease to its max damage distance and ADS speed has undermined its fan-favourite attributes. It's really versatile compared to other ARs, but it's also strong at finishing off enemies at close quarters. If mid-distance weaponry is your thing, go for a meta gun like the Cooper Carbine (opens in new tab). Its fire rate continues to be a beaut to handle, too. This extremely fast SMG is one of the most dominant weapons in short distances and has improved its reliability in the mid-range. Now after consistent performance throughout last season, it climbs to A-tier. The PPSh-41 (opens in new tab) was stuck in the mid-tiers last season, but definitely showed promise. You also get to see the new words you're learning used in common conversations, listen to them (if you choose to have audio on), repeat the phrases, and learn more about verb groups. If it asks you to spell a phrase, the letters are included. Each lesson takes you through translations, and includes variations of the word or phrase, pictures and whether it's formal or informal. The minimalist layout of the Babbel app helps prevent a new language (French for me) from seeming overwhelming, without making it boring. I found Babbel to be the most like a foreign language course you'd see in an online school curriculum. With works drawn from the Carter’s permanent collection, Horizon Lines reminds us that our experience of space and our relationship to our environment-whether the sea, land, or constructed urban landscape-shifts depending on our different points of view. From the time of the Renaissance, Western-trained artists of two-dimensional works have relied on the system of linear perspective, with all lines converging at one or more vanishing points, to create the illusion of depth on paper, canvas, or even a wall. Where that line is placed influences our experience of the human relationship to the environment. In art, a horizontal line separating two fields of color is the most basic tool in the artist’s arsenal to create the suggestion of a landscape. We can learn to trade the muted tones of mountains seen through mists for the awe-inducing majesty of a wide expanse of colorful sunset or a cornucopia of stars in the uninterrupted night skies. Our relationship to natural surroundings changes as we explore new horizons. To them, it is calming to be able to acknowledge the land for as far as the eye can see. Horizon Line Villas is a complex of luxury villas in Kiotari Rhodes, which is situated only 40 meters from a beach of exquisite beauty, ideal for beach holidays. Others find comfort in expansive views of open skies, such as the vistas of Texas. The placement of the horizon line is determined by which parts of the scene contain the visual information you think is the most important. For some people, large shade trees and rolling hills provide a sense of safe enclosure. I want the story to be about the characters, not the writer (unless it is an autobiography). It's actually all about me." Maybe that's what he wanted me to be thinking, but that's not my style as a reader or a writer. The whole time I was reading it, James Joyce was right there in my face saying, "See what I'm doing? The literary device is the thing, not the characters. *Shudder* I know old James had a perfectly legitimate reason for writing an entire chapter with no periods (and I respect that), but reading something like that just drives me crazy. If you want to give me a headache borne of pure annoyance, just hand me the last chapter of Ulysses. I expect to see that sort of thing when I read a journal forum like this (a place where things are written quickly and informally and not thorougly revised), but not in a book. That's fine in dialogue, if it's appropriate to the character, but narration that is littered with these things just annoys me. My personal pet peeve is clumsy writing (bad grammar, awkward sentence construction, misused or missing punctuation, etc.). I read Pamuk's Black Book in 2003, but I can't remember it well enough to recall if that device was there. I can understand how the kind of directness you've described above could be kind of strange, though, although I don't recall having encountered this device. I also enjoy third person narration that comes across as storytelling. I love first-person narration in which a character speaks directly to the reader as if he/she were actually sitting across from you, telling you the story. In any case, I take the long way in agreeing with prestoimp, above. Abigail Thomas, in one of the more beautiful books I've read in recent years - Safekeeping - used these direct appeals to anchor an otherwise complex poetic narrative firmly in the real (if you've read it, note the narrators phone conversations with her sister). When done well, those little breaks in the third wall feel intimate. If anything, I appreciate the device (the conceit? the effect?) when it's used well, because it feels more honest to me (tho it can be sneaky and sly, too). So it's not particularly jarring for me to be reminded that there is an author behind this work, an author making deliberate choices in service to the story, to the ideas, and to the reader. Maybe it's my limitation as a reader, but as I read, I'm always looking for the scaffolding underneath the art. Perhaps because Ondaatje hails from others literary worlds, poetry and nonfiction, he's not so invested in the aesthetics of naturalism. I don't have a copy handy, but I recall Michael Ondaatje using this technique in some of his work (I'm thinking of In the Skin of a Lion and also The English Patient, neither of which I have on hand, so I'm sorry to say I can't quote, but I think he took a light hand with it) and I think he does so to great effect. When you're reading, what forces you out of the story and makes you remember that you're reading a book? But for the moment it's just an obstacle between me and full immersion in the book.Īll of which leads (via a maddeningly circuitous route) to my Gentle Reader Question of the Day: Certainly I felt that way about the narrator in The Life of Pi, who seemed to add nothing to the story-until I reached the final dazzling chapter and realized it couldn't have been written any other way. Perhaps the reason for this device will become clear later in the book perhaps I'll even come to believe the story required it. While not uncommon in Victorian novels, this "Gentle Reader" technique is rare in modern fiction. "We'll have a lot to say about melancholy later on."."Let us take advantage of this lull to whisper a few biographical details."."We should note straightaway that this soft, downy beauty of a coat would cause him shame and disquiet during the days he was to spend in Kars, while also furnishing a sense of security.".I haven't read enough yet to form an opinion of the novel, but in the opening chapter I've found myself jolted out of the story by a literary device not often used today: speaking directly to the reader. I'm reading Orhan Pamuk's Snow, the story of an exiled poet returning to Istanbul after a long absence. In such a bedroom, you must also hang a mirror and an original print, e.g. White walls with delicately glossy wallpaper, white satin bedding, black velvet headboard and black accessories will be perfect. If we want to maintain consistency in the interiors and decorate the bedroom in a glamourous style, we can make these two colours its color base. The most elegant colours are, of course, black and white. Three, or four prints will surely catch the eye of the household members and their visitors. You can then choose images with similar aesthetics, or choose completely different ones and unify them with elegant frames. Certainly designating one of the walls in the living room as a real art gallery will be in line with the glamuor convention. After all, glamour is splendor, but not an exaggeration. All depends on how much we have gone crazy, or plan to go crazy, with other additions. Glamour images can be simply elegant, such as black and white, or truly elegant. For a living room arranged in such a way, you need to choose non-accidental prints. Any gold, or silver finishes, as well as glass, light-reflecting decorations will certainly work. It is important to choose all accessories with care, because if you do not do it, it is easy to turn glamour into kitsch. Gilded or copper bowls or sculptures will also look good. You can consider wallpaper with a shimmering ornament. The living room, considered the heart of the house, is worth equipping with high-gloss furniture, stylized or simply crystal chandeliers, elegant curtains. Anyone who wants to live in a unique place, refined with attention to detail, and feel in their own home every day as in a real residence, should consider the glamour style. Modern glamour interiors, apart from being simply beautifully finished and decorated, invite you to suberge yourself in their pleasant glow. However, those who think that such arrangements are cold and devoid of coziness, are wrong. The glamour style in the interiors manifests itself in elegance and chic. Soft furnishings are the perfect way to add country style comfort to a room without having to completely redecorate.' says Leigh.Glamour is English splendor, brilliance and charm. 'Hanging a mirror just a few inches above the mantle keeps it at a useable height and helps to reflect decorative items stood in front of it. 'Refresh this trend with a contemporary twist by opting for clean designs set in brass frames, or go for something more decorative with ornate furniture with a bevelled finish.' How do you display mirrors? 'Pair them with bright vases, filled with rich winter blooms that can be wonderfully reflected in the mirrored surface.' Mirrored side tables and cabinets are great for those smaller spaces as they bounce light around the room.' 'This retro revival brings a grown-up luxe touch to your interior style and has more to it than aesthetics alone. '70’s inspired interiors are back with a bang and as we move towards the party season consider adding some much needed celebratory glam into your home with gleaming mirrored furniture,' says Nadia McCowan-Hill, resident style advisor, Wayfair (opens in new tab). How can I incorporate mirrors into my home? 'Including warm recessed LEDs, bespoke mirrored door designs and decorative glass finishes helps to maximize light and a sense of space within a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room. 'When designing a dressing room, it’s important to think about lighting and light-reflecting surfaces to make a windowless or smaller room come to life, making it a beautiful place to spend time in,' says Philipp Nagel, Director of Neatsmith (opens in new tab). Whether you've got a walk-in closet or just want to spruce up an existing wardrobe, you can't beat bespoke mirror ideas for their made-to-measure fit.
